The spa is a well established institution in Poland. Poles have has them since 1817, when Professor Jozef Celinski discovered the healing powers of Nałeczow’s springs.
In the recent years, Nałeczow spa has occupied the 1st place in this year’s ranking by the newspapers of non public therapeutic institutions.
For decades the conditions in Poland’s sanatorium were rather rudimentary: dormitories for several patients are standard, with a shared bathroom along the corridor, miserable refectories, and meal to match. Over the years this fact has changed and nowadays, as a result not only people requiring treatment go to Nałeczow. People in top company positions, ministers and members of parliament, and celebrities all relax in comfortable conditions, at the same time taking advantage of the services, such as massages, and baths.
This place contains thermal baths, hydrotherapeutic services, a biological renewal centre, and a gym hall for all clients. There is also a mud pool in which the patient will float on the surface as in the Dead Sea.
The catch phrase “Nałeczow treats the heart” is true. Arterial tension falls by itself in all patients who go there. But the air is not sufficient for everybody. Today, with the most modern equipment, the spa can get patients with heart transplants fully fit again. |

Health resort treatment consists in a complex treatment procedure exploiting natural healing facilities existing in the resort area: physiotherapy, psychotherapy, alimentotherapy, and, if necessary, pharmacotherapy, as well as healing properties of climate and landscape.
It is a continuation of an ambulatory and hospital treatment of many diseases requiring further therapy and rehabilitation.
Biotherapeutical methods are not likely to bring immediate effects, and an improvement in health usually occurs later, very often after the completion of a therapeutic treatment series. Nevertheless, the results attained with these methods are advantageous in comparison to pharmacotherapy as they are more stable and long lasting which comes from the fact that they are arrived at in much more physiological ways, and they do not cause side effects.
The treatment profile of the resort has been determined by the scope of natural materials present in the area. Accordingly, the following afflictions are treated in Busko Zdroj, on the basis of saline sulfide-hydrogen-sulfide waters:
• Rheumatologic
• Neurological
• Posttraumatic states of the motor organ
• Some skin diseases, psoriasis, seborrhea, occupational dermatoses
• Ischemia of the lower limbs
• Diabetes
• Hypertension
• Gynecological diseases, chronic inflammatory states of ovaries, infertility
• Gums and periodontium diseases
• Vegetative neuroses
An important element of the treatment is the patient’s cooperation and understanding of the principles and the ultimate goal of the therapy. It is worth noting that full recovery is guaranteed not by the overall number of treatments undertaken but their adequate choice.
Treatments
Sulfide baths: saline sulfide-hydrogen-sulfide waters originate from natural springs occurring in the resort area. Active compounds: dissolved hydrogen sulfide, hydrosulfidic and sulfidic ions penetrate the skin during the bath. The compounds exert local and general effects on the body. In low concentration they facilitate elastic and coherent cuticle formation, and in high concentration they soften and scale the cuticle, which is exploited in healing skin diseases such as: psoriasis, affections with excessive callosity… the general effect consist in regenerating the joint cartilage and the connective tissue.
Sulfide limb baths: used in case of patients with existing contraindications against tub baths. The treatment consists in submerging patient’s upper and lower limbs in sulfidic water. The effects are as described above.
Mud wrappings: application of therapeutic peat at 42 - 45˚C for deep body superheating painkilling action, diastolic action, removal of by-products of metabolism. In addition, the peat acts chemically- humic acids, fulvene acids, estrogenic bodies, proteins and tanning agents, exhibits an anti inflammatory action, and contracting, regenerative and bactericidal effects.
Underwater massage: air delivered under pressure to the bathtub, provides tonification and relaxation effects, and special emulsions added to the water lessen tension and strengthen calming and painkilling action. |

This sanatorium has a 160 year tradition in successfully curing diseases of the locomotive system (skeleton, joints, muscles, mobility) which usually have a rheumatic background; offering diagnostics and treatment of osteoporosis, lumbago, arthritis, discopathia, neurological disabilities, and conditions after accidents, after orthopedic operations, after strokes, myocardial infarctions, coronary angioplasty and patients with arterial hypertension. Allergies, psoriasis, its variations and other skin problems are also treated at Busko-Zdrój - the percentage of recoveries is extremely high.
Sulphide springs (unique for Busko-Zdrój) combine the features of iodide and bromide mineral water and the products of sulphur reduction in gypsum deposits. The curative process begins when bivalent sulphur is absorbed from the skin, respiratory system, digestive tract and female reproductive organs. This initiates a chain of biochemical reactions, antiphlogistic and antidotal processes. Suggested treatment includes baths, washing the mouth, irrigation and drinking. Among the beneficial effects, the most significant ones have proved to be the reduction of the sugar and cholesterol level in blood, alleviation of swelling, pain relief and improvement of motor activity of the joints. We have also observed a rejuvenating effect of the Sulphide water.
Sulfide bath
Sulfide waters used here for baths come from natural springs in the environs of Busko-Zdrój. Saline sulfide-sulphuretted hydrogen waters also contain a lot of other microelements. Sulfide ion is their crucial active factor which is easily absorbed into the blood stream through the skin and reaches all the tissues of the system, prevents tissues from being destroyed by inflammatory conditions, stops blood vessels from being injured and lowers blood coagulability. Sulfide baths have regenerative effects on connective tissue, which favors the treatment of rheumatic diseases, deforming osteoarthrosis and atheromatosis.
Iodide-bromide bath
Iodide-bromide water containing iodine and selenium is used in some diseases of the circulatory system and the nervous system. Selenium present in the water is indispensable to the health of the heart muscle and blood vessels, counteracts neoplasia and enhances the immune system.
Carbon dioxide bath
This bath water is a mixture of water with such a quantity of carbon dioxide that the bath water reaches temperatures of 32 to 34C. Carbon dioxide present in the water comes out as gas bubbles on the skin and causes a great many changes in the system by dilating arterial and venous capillaries, which results in lowering blood pressure. A CO2 bath also has soothing and relaxing effects. It is used in circulatory failure, post-inflammation of the heart muscle treatment, myocardial degeneration, obesity and neurosis.
Underwater massage
Recommended for relieving muscular tension (of the transversospinal system in discopathia in particular) and used in back pains.
Hydromassage
Different massages – a hand massage, a partial rotational massage, and complete massage with a mechanical effect on the tissues, contributing to a faster flow of body fluids, which improves the efficiency of the whole system or its specific organs.
Cyrotherapy
Treatment at extremely low temperatures. It consists in lowering the temperature of tissues by nitrogen vapors refrigerated to –180 degrees C. A procedure takes 1 to 3 minutes. It has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, combats tissue swelling and improves the movement of joints.
